Carpet Padding

Carpet padding is an underlying layer that carpet installers put down for residential applications. It is less frequently used in commercial applications, or if it is used, a very thin layer of padding is put down. Carpet padding offers more give than you get from carpet itself, especially when using a short weave or when laying carpet on a concrete surface.

Carpet padding is made of many materials in modern times. These materials include recycled rubber, foam padding, polyurethane, and synthetic fiber. The pricing of carpet padding is done on a by the square yard basis. Pricing changes both by the thickness of the pad and by the material used in it. It can be as little as 99 cents per square yard, or exceed $15 per square yard.

What kind of material you use for carpet padding is up to you, but you should consider several factors when choosing. What is the life of your carpet? This is important because you want a pad with the same lifetime as the carpeting. A pad that lasts longer gets ripped up when you replace the carpeting anyway, and having your pad wear out will leave you with a carpet that looks fine but feels awful. What kind of traffic is your carpeted area going to get? Lower traffic areas in residential settings will be much less demanding on your pad than a high traffic business setting. Choose your padding to fit this demand.
