Carpet Rug

Rug carpets are one of the earliest forms of carpeting. One variety in particular, the hand knotted pile carpet dates as far back as 3000 BCE. This type of carpeting originated in what is modern day Turkey. They began using carpeting out of environmental necessity. The temperature shifts between day and night were sizable in Turkey, and the ancient Turks needed a form of insulation between the floor of their dwellings and the ground. And thus the carpet was born.

Rugs had great value, especially to the nomadic peoples of Central Asia because they could be rolled up and moved without much effort. As time went on decoration was added to their rug carpets, and with the opening of trade routes both to china and to Europe, these carpets became a valued commodity.

Today we use rug carpets to soften the look of a room with hardwood or tiled floors. In addition to the softening effect the carpet has, the imagery available in modern rugs can provide a stunning contrast to the flooring. And yes, even today we use rugs to insulate the floors. Anyone who steps out of the shower onto a cold tile floor can tell you how nice a rug feels by comparison. Sometimes the old uses are still the best ones.
