Carpet Tiles

Carpet tiles, also known as carpet squares, are a style of carpet favored in high traffic settings, such as a school or office. They are relatively cheap compared to single piece carpeting, but their main advantage lies in their versatility and resilience. One is not used to thinking of carpeting in these terms, but they are really an ideal way to describe carpet tiles.

First versatility, when you think of carpet you think of a floor covering. This is unsurprising, that is in fact the purpose of carpet. But what else does carpet conjure in terms of mental images? Spills immediately come to mind. Specifically a glass of red wine falling in slow motion towards a pristine white carpet appears in my mind’s eye. As the droplets of wine fly upon impact, scattering across several feet they can almost be seen as money on fire, burning into the investment in that white carpet.

Carpet tiles, while certainly not an elegant solution, present us with a new way to picture the above scenario. Instead of a ghastly stain that ruins your white carpet, carpet tiling allows you to replace only those portions of the carpet that are damaged. While this may not be a trait admired in a personal setting, to a school or business running on a budged it is something to be treasured. After all, they aren’t as concerned with the style points of their floor coverings as with their practical durability and bottom line value.

Durability is another category in which carpet tiles excel. While a long fiber carpet wears down under the traffic of countless feet; carpet tiles are compact short weave affairs and hold up extremely well under traffic. Not only that, but if you do start wearing through tiles in your highest traffic areas, it’s a simple matter to replace the tiles in those zones without ripping up your entire floor.

Referring back to the stain scenario I mentioned before, there is another aspect to consider with carpet tiles. Because they are short fibered and compact, they are generally more stain repellent than long fiber carpeting. This may seem incidental but the fewer stains your carpet absorbs, the longer it will look good. Combine that with the rich colors available to carpet tiles and you have a recipe for good looking, long lasting carpet.

While none of this will appeal to most home owners it really isn’t meant to. Carpet tiles are designed for and marketed to businesses. Don’t believe me? Take a look at the carpet in your bank the next time you go to visit. Or look at the carpet in your child’s classroom in school. The government and banks are among the stingiest entities in existence; and they love carpet tiles for good reason. They are simply the most cost effective way to carpet an area. If that is what you are after in a floor covering then carpet tiles are the solution to your flooring needs.
