Oriental Carpet

Oriental carpets are prized for their beauty, durability, and rarity. Unlike most carpet made today, oriental rugs are normally hand woven in a process that can take anywhere from a few months to a few years. The variation in time is due to different sized rugs, as well as varying complexities in pattern.

Because oriental carpets take so long to make, they are the gold standard for area rugs. Unlike carpeting that is secured to the floor, an oriental carpet covers anywhere from a small portion of a room to filling the room; yet they are not secured to the floor. It is estimated that the carpet producing industry in Iran alone exceeded $420 million in 2008.

The intricate designs in oriental rugs are another aspect of their appeal. These designs are usually abstract patterns or a picture of a famous landmark. This is due to an Islamic proscription regarding making images of man or animals. Contrary to popular belief, this proscription is not found in the Qur’an, but rather a tradition that has been passed down over time. As this tradition gained weight, so too did the tradition of creating beautiful art with abstract designs become more developed. One result is the oriental rugs we see today.
